Libraries Rock: Teen Summer Reading Program 2018

Register on Wandoo beginning May 11!

The Teen Summer Reading Program includes weekly events and the opportunity to earn prizes for reading. Students attending grades 6-12 in the fall are eligible to participate. This year's theme is Libraries Rock! Please note that many of the programs will include physical activity, so read the complete notification on the library website or as a part of the reading challenges. Doing so will get you an extra entry in the grand prize drawing!

NOTE: To participate in reading for prizes, you must be a Payne County resident or go to school in Payne County or live within 30 miles of Stillwater or be visiting Payne County in person for the majority of the summer.

Reading Tracking 

Track time read online using your wandoo username and password. You can access the site at home, at the library catalog computers, or on your mobile device. Librarians are happy to show you how to track your time on wandoo!

5 Hours of Reading

Once 5 hours are read, and your time has been entered on wandoo, you will receive one entry into the grand prize drawing plus one of the following prizes (while supplies last):

  • Food or activity coupons 
  • Library fine coupon
  • Extra entry in the grand prize drawing

20 hours of reading

After logging 20 hours, teens earn a free book of their choice, in addition to the regular 5-hour prize!

Teen Summer T-Shirts

We're streamlining the t-shirt process this year: anyone participating in a SPL summer reading program can take their own shirt (blank on front or back) to Chris' University Spirit along with the t-shirt printing coupon to be able to get a shirt printed. You'll earn your coupon along with a regular prize at 5 hours of reading.

Summer Program Schedule (Wed. 2:30-4:30PM @ the Library)

June 6: Astronomy Rocks! The Lunar Sooners, an outreach group of astronomy students from Oklahoma University, will bring a portable planetarium to SPL.  Our teens will spend time learning about the stars in the planetarium, participating in hands-on astronomy demonstrations and spend time in a question and answer session with the Lunar Sooner.

June 13: Climbing Rocks! Enjoy an afternoon of rock wall climbing at the Colvin Center. Teens MUST wear tennis shoes and bring a signed waiver to participate.

June 20: Ukuleles Rock! Stillwater Ukulele Association will get our teens up to speed on ukuleles. The group will perform a few songs and present information on ukuleles followed by lessons for uke players of any ability. The culmination of the program will be a collaborative performance by our teens. Teens who have ukes are encouraged to bring their own.

June 27: Latin Dance Rocks! Heather Burns, a professional dancer and choreographer specializing in Afro-Cuban dance, will introduce and model Latin dance movements and rhythms including cha cha cha, conga, danzon, mambo, orishas, palo, and rumba.  She will teach about the history of the dances and offer instructions on movement.  The teens will get a chance to show off their new skills in a performance to some Latin music.

July 11: Geology Rocks! Members of the Oklahoma State University Geology department will bring hands-on geology demonstrations to SPL. Teens will have a chance to interact firsthand with different types of rocks and participate in activities involving the different minerals. The geology group will present information on other facets of geology and answer questions posed by the teens.

July 18: African Dance, Music and Drum Lessons Rock! Aboubacar Camara and percussionists who specialize in African music will give a thirty minute presentation and performance of African drumming and dance. Teens will then learn different dances and percussion rhythms from various African cultural traditions and the meanings of these dances and rhythms. 

July 25: Bowling Finale. Teens will end the summer by enjoying bowling and snacks and Frontier Lanes and announcement of prize winners. Teens must bring a signed waiver to participate. Please note that the location has changed!

Fribrary Summer Schedule (Fri. 6:30-8:30PM) 

Fribrary is held every Friday from 6:30-8:30PM, year-round. Check out our Fribrary page for our summer schedule, including a list of movies we'll be showing!

Grand Prize and Weekly Drawings

At each weekly program names will be drawn for small prizes. At the summer finale, all submitted reading logs and "extra" entries will be compiled and winners for the grand prize will be drawn. One grand prize winner will get to choose one of the prizes below. The prizes are valued at approximately $400 each.

Top 30 Readers

The 30 teens who read the most this summer will be invited to attend an after hours Nerf War at the library on Saturday August 4th from 6:30-8:30pm, The library will provide nerf guns and darts for all participants to use.


Teens can volunteer to help with the children's summer reading program by helping collect kids' reading logs and distributing prizes, preparing craft activities, cleaning up the kids' area, and more. Pick up a volunteer application at the library, or click here to print one at home!
