A Universe of Stories: Teen Summer Reading Program 2019
The Teen Summer Reading Program includes weekly events and the opportunity to earn prizes for reading. Students attending grades 6-12 in the fall are eligible to participate. This year's theme is A Universe of Stories. Please note that many of the programs will include physical activity, so read the complete notification on the library website or as a part of the reading challenges. Doing so will get you an extra entry in the grand prize drawing!
NOTE: To participate in reading for prizes, you must be a Payne County resident or go to school in Payne County or live within 30 miles of Stillwater or be visiting Payne County in person for the majority of the summer.
Track time read online using your wandoo username and password. You can access the site at home, at the library catalog computers, or on your mobile device. Librarians are happy to show you how to track your time on wandoo!
5 Hours of Reading
Once 5 hours are read, and your time has been entered on wandoo, you will receive one entry into the grand prize drawing plus one of the following prizes (while supplies last):
- Food or activity coupons
- Library fine coupon
- Extra entry in the grand prize drawing
20 hours of reading
After logging 20 hours, teens earn a free book of their choice, in addition to the regular 5-hour prize! (Maximum of 5 free books.)
Teen Summer T-Shirts
We're printing our own shirts this year! Our June 5th program will include the chance to turn your own dark color (e.g. black or navy) shirt into a galaxy shirt and screenprint our summer reading logo onto it! For those who can't make the program, we're planning to have an couple of alternate times you can print it during our Fribrary movie nights, or you can pick a shirt printing coupon for Chris' University Spirit as a reading prize, then take it there along with your shirt to get it printed.
Summer Program Schedule (Wed. 2:30-4:30PM @ the Library)
June 5 - GALAXY SHIRTS @ Prairie Arts: make and decorate a galaxy shirt and screenprint our awesome SRP logo onto it! Bring your own dark-colored shirt (e.g. black or navy blue) to ensure the best fit & comfort, or use one of our black shirts (adult sizes only).
June 12 - SUPERHEROES IN SPACE: forge your own superhero accessories, create comic book crafts, team up for trivia quizzes, and more!
June 19 - SCI-FI/SCI-FACT: try some hands-on science fun with DIY lava lamps, slime, & more, then check out some old science fiction concepts and explore the media people thought would last forever by doing some mixed media art with old tapes, cds, and more.
June 26 - STAR WARS w/Mandalorian Mercs & friends!: learn how the semi-pros create their props, then take apart old appliances and electronics to scavenge parts to make your own! We’ll also have Lego & origami paper on hand to build your own ships.
July 3 - ROCKET LAUNCH w/OSU Engineering @ Boomer Lake*: work with your friends using recycled materials to build, test, and launch bottle rockets at Boomer Lake! Popsicles provided, but make sure to wear some sunblock
July 10 - HANDS-ON ASTRONOMY w/ NASA: hands-on projects to learn about meteors, craters, and more, with NASA’s Outreach Program!
July 17 - CARDBOARD CONSTRUCTION COMPETITION: grab an appliance box and work with your team to create a space station or ship! Creations will be judged on creativity, cohesion, theme, teamwork, and presentation.
July 24 - FINALE @ Ultimate Air Trampoline Park: we can’t get you into orbit, but you can bounce pretty high at our finale at Ultimate Air Trampoline Park! Snacks provided, please bring your own Ultimate Air socks if you have them (we’ll provide them if not), waiver required.
Fribrary Summer Schedule (Fri. 6:30-8:30PM)
Fribrary is held every Friday from 6:30-8:30PM, year-round. Check out our Fribrary page for our summer schedule, including a list of movies we'll be showing!
Grand Prize and Weekly Drawings
At each weekly program names will be drawn for small prizes. At the summer finale, all submitted reading logs and "extra" entries will be compiled and winners for the grand prize will be drawn. One grand prize winner will get to choose one of the prizes below. The prizes are valued at approximately $350 each.

Top 30 Readers
The 30 teens who read the most this summer will be invited to attend an after hours Nerf War at the library on Saturday August 4th from 6:30-8:30pm, The library will provide nerf guns and darts for all participants to use.
Teens can volunteer to help with the children's summer reading program by helping collect kids' reading logs and distributing prizes, preparing craft activities, cleaning up the kids' area, and more. Pick up a volunteer application at the library, or click here to print one at home!
