Oklahoma Sequoyah Award

Sequoyah logo

With this award, Oklahoma honors the Native American leader Sequoyah, for his unique achievement in creating the Cherokee syllabary. Sequoyah chose eighty-five symbols to represent all spoken sounds of the Cherokee language. In so doing, he created a way to preserve his people's language and culture.

Each Sequoyah Masterlist is chosen by a committee of librarians from public and school libraries. The students in the state of Oklahoma read at least 3 books from their respective list and vote on their favorite book to chose the winner. Students can vote at their school or a public library in March. For more information about the Oklahoma Sequoyah Award, visit the Oklahoma Library Association's webpage about the award at http://oklibs.org/modx/Organization/Committees/Sequoyah.htm.

Please Note: The books on the Sequoyah Masterlists are not intended to be an automatic recommendation of the books. It is not the intention of the committees that every student must read every book on a masterlist.
