Local children and OKC Improv take the stage at Stillwater Public Library
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / June 2, 2015) – Two troupes of super heroic performers take the stage next week at the Stillwater Public Library’s “Summer @ Your Library.” Children will be treated to Rana McCoy’s popular annual operetta while teens will enjoy the unpredictable fun of improv.
On Tuesday, June 9, children across the community come together to perform “The Granny Awards,” an operetta produced by Rana McCoy. The show will be performed by local children at10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
“The kids have been working hard on their roles ever since they auditioned in late March,” said Diane Dean, a longtime Stage Assistant, who is now a part-time children’s public librarian. “We have an exceptional group of singers, dancers and performers.”
“The Granny Awards” features a large array of characters, from stories like “Snow White” and “Jack and the Beanstalk,” who are all hoping to win the coveted Academy Award of Fairytale performances.
The characters are also celebrating the long career and retirement of “Granny” who appears in many children’s stories. As the awards are handed out, one particular character makes trouble at the ceremony, which ends with a fun surprise ending.
Cast members include Dawson Claxton, Boone Bateson, Morgan McMurry, Malaury Bale, Hampton Peek, Claire Willman, Lexy McKnight, Libby Bruder, Bailey Holcomb, Serenity Cochran, Ruth Cochran, Anna Bosma, Elise Bosma, Emma Goodner, Mary Kate Coble, Suchita Madihally, Josie Bryant, Mena Awad and Jaelyn Gahagans.
“Of all the shows, this is probably one of the crowds’ favorites,” said Dean. “Kids will see many of the characters they have grown to love in their storybooks and there are tons of surprises.”
The operetta is sponsored Bank SNB, Charlie's Drug, Continental Concrete, Bank N.A., Chris' University Spirit, OnCue, Mazzios Pizza, G&M Body Shop, Pioneer Tire, Kicker, Costumes, Balloons, and Stuff, Aspen-Western, Wal-Mart, Fisher-Provence Realtors and Instrumental Inspirations Music Studio.
“The Granny Awards” is open to all children and families. Children should wear their summer reading t-shirts for chances to win a prize.
On Wednesday, June 10, at 2:30 p.m., the OKC Improv performs “It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Super Improv!” at the young adults’ “Unmasked!” program.
Students will work with OKC Improv members in small groups where they will learn the basic tenets of improv performances and practice with several short scenes. Afterwards, the players and participants will do an interactive performance with prompts and themes that reference superheroes.
OKC Improv is a community arts organization devoted to building a thriving and sustainable improv community by providing regular performance opportunities. It works to raise awareness and understanding of improv as an art form.
“We have had OKC Improv in the past and the teens loved it,” said Emily States, teen librarian. “The teen years often involve an abundance of awkwardness and self-consciousness, but the troupe somehow always manages to get them to come out of their shells and really engage in the activities.”
The program is open to students who are going into 6-12 grades. For more information about the group, visit http://www.okcimprov.com.
Thursday, June 11, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., “Summer Cinema @ the Library” presents the story of a little mouse with giant ears who dreams of becoming a knight.
