Geeks unite for fandom festival at Stillwater Public Library

Flyer Final(STILLWATER, OKLA. / July 29, 2015) – The Stillwater Public Library wants community members to get their geek on at its mini-convention celebrating comics, sci-fi and fantasy books, graphic novels, movie and TV fandoms, anime and gaming.

“LexiCon” will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature activities for people of all ages, including visits from iconic science fiction and fantasy guests and chances to win free tickets to the Tulsa Comic Con and OKC Izumicon.

“Growing up as a so-called ‘geek’ was awkward and embarrassing for many of us,” said Paula Long, librarian and long-time nerd. “But it is a great time to be a geek. All types of people are now starting to see what we’ve known all along. Science is cool. Computers are cool. Reading and comics are cool. LexiCon will be a fun way for us to celebrate that.”

Every LexiCon attendee will receive one entry in a drawing to win two one-day passes to the Wizard World Comic Con Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 24. In addition, anyone who attends wearing a costume will get an extra entry in the drawing.

“We really want everyone to have fun getting into character for LexiCon,” said Long. “In the middle of the event, we’ll have a costume and cosplay contest. We can’t wait to see how creative the community gets.”

Prizes will be given in several categories during the costume contest. The grand prize winner will receive two tickets to Izumicon, a 3-Day Japanese culture and Anime convention held in Oklahoma City Oct.30-Nov. 1.

Before and after the costume contest, participants can meet special guests including the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers and JediOKC who will be available for free photo opportunities throughout the event. The 501st Legion also will be collecting money for charity through a “Shoot the Stormtrooper” Nerf gun activity.

Other highlights of LexiCon include a drawing class, cosplay and makeup workshops, an independent publishing panel, a nerd culture discussion, a special screening from the Red Dirt Film Festival and medieval combat demonstrations from Stillwater’s Society for Creative Anachronism. These workshops and panel discussions are scheduled throughout the event.

When not taking part in workshops or classes, participants can enjoy activities such as tabletop gaming, children’s crafting and fandom meet-ups. In addition, Oklahoma gaming and SciFi merchants, artists and authors will be at booths selling artwork, books, games, props and more.

Entry to LexiCon is free and open to all ages. Food truck vendors will be outside the library for those who want to eat at the event. For more information about specific activities and for costume guidelines, visit the LexiCon website at or contact the Help Desk at or 405-372-3633 x8106.
