American Sign Language class offered at Stillwater Public Library beginning April 27

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / March 15, 2016) –– A popular language series is returning to Stillwater Public Library this spring and is open to area residents. “Conversational American Sign Language,” a four week course offered by OSU Arts and Science Outreach, will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each Wednesday, April 27-June 1.

“Our American Sign Language offers so much more than just signs, said Taylor Woodall, series instructor. “Along with the language, students will learn the experiences of a Deaf person living in the hearing world. It will change your perspective of Deaf people and the barriers they constantly overcome.”

The non-credit classes will include vocabulary, stories, and information about Deaf culture. Students will work with the instructor and peers during class activities to enhance their learning experience. Outside activities and assignments will help put into practice what students learn during class.

“By the end of the series, students can expect to have a basic understanding of fingerspelling skills,” said Woodall. “More importantly, students will be able to initiate and conduct short conversations in ASL.”

Woodall is an Oklahoma State Quality Assurance Screening Test certified sign language interpreter. She has been involved in the Deaf community since 2012 and currently works at Oklahoma State University as a teaching assistant for American Sign Language, levels 1-4, Interpreting Ethics, and ASL Linguistics. In the fall, Woodall will be teaching a section of ASL 1 along with lead professor Sandie Busby.

Woodall also mentors students and future interpreters to assist them in becoming certified or to improve their certification. She is currently working toward completing her national certification.

Early bird registration for the class is $89 until April 13.  After that date, the class fee is $109. Online registration is available at http://asoutreach.okstate.edu/community/asl. A link to purchase the course book is on the same page.
